It is often used as a backdrop for movies and television shows set in the British capital but at the weekend, we saw it for very different reasons.
It was the site of the second and close to the third terrorist attacks in as many weeks in the United Kingdom.
The home of the Queen and the humble scone has been turned upside down in the past few weeks – first with the attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester and more recently with the incident at London Bridge and Borough Market.
In Manchester, 22 were killed and more than 100 injured and at the weekend, six were killed with at least 30 more injured.
A van ploughed into people on the bridge before it drove to the Borough Market, where the occupants emerged from the van and began stabbing people.
What kind of a world do we live in?
It is frightening to think the Manchester venue filled with children, most attending their first concert, was targeted for such a horrific act.
Footage showed people running out of the venue while parents, putting their own safety last, stood at the bottom of staircases waiting for a glimpse of their children.
And then weeks later, one of London’s most iconic landmarks is attacked.
Police literally told those in the vicinity to run and hide, because what else could you do?
Residents and visitors say they are now living in fear, wondering if it’s safe to be in the United Kingdom.
And the question on everyone’s lips is – what next?
Are there more attacks planned?
Will it be in a different country?
The acts of a few have instilled fear everywhere and the most disappointing part about that is that it feels like we are letting them win.
Ever since Manchester, numerous people of Muslim faith have come out and said they do not support this.
We are punishing the Muslim followers for the acts of a radical few.
There is no denying the horror or the severity of what has happened and it’s hard to not spare a thought for the victims.
Our thoughts are with those who were injured or to the families who lost loved ones.
We hope and pray this is the last of it.
