Ms Broughton is one of the entrants in this year’s Showgirl Competition.
The Dubbo Showgirl is chosen each year at the Dubbo Show. They are judged on their personality, confidence, goals, knowledge and presentation.
The 23-year-old decided to put her hand up for the role after hearing the experience her cousin had last year, in particular how she met a range of new people, Ms Broughton said.
“I’ve never done anything like this and I didn’t know about it before last year,” she said.
“It’s a great opportunity to find out more about the show and meet all kinds of people I wouldn’t normally talk to.”
The Show Society said the Showgirl competition aimed to find the person most suited to represent young, regional women of NSW.
The Showgirl is the ‘face of the show’ and assists in obtaining new and diverse contacts for the show, as well as promoting special events.
Ms Broughton, who will turn 24-years-old on the first day of the Dubbo Show, said she was excited about the experience.
“I’m actually looking forward to the public speaking and the interview,” she said.
“I feel like I’m ready to do something that scares me.”
Ms Broughton said she believed the perfect Showgirl was someone who had a lot of confidence.
Even if she wasn’t chosen as the 2017 Showgirl, Ms Broughton said it would be a learning experience.
“You don’t have to win things to get the benefit out of it,” she said.
It was a misconception that had held the Showgirl entrant back in the past.
“I thought you had to be really heavily into [agriculture]. They want you to have some knowledge about ag, but it turns out that’s not the case,” Ms Broughton said.
She said she had fond memories of the Dubbo Show from when she was younger.
“I remember putting in artwork when we were in school and getting $60 which you’d spend in the first ten minutes on rides, but I’ve never been involved in the show like this before,” she said.
For the past 18 months Ms Broughton has worked at Pilates Exclusive on Church Street. She’s also studying a Level 2 in Pilates Movement Therapy.
A lot of the clients had chronic pain, Ms Broughton said, and she loved being able to make a difference in their lives.
The 2017 Dubbo Showgirl, as well as this year’s Teenage Showgirl, will be announced during the show on Saturday, May 27.
