The display consists of 20 silk embroidered postcards and four embossed greeting cards that were handcrafted during the First World War.
Local studies officer Simone Taylor said 100-year-old items were generally handcrafted by French and Belgian women.
Family, unity, liberty and remembrance were common themes.
“When you’re dealing with WWI generally the stories are really sad and horrific, but this is something beautiful that came out of the situation,” she said.
“They’re beautifully detailed and coloured, hand-made cards sold to soldiers and sent across the world.”
The items were loaned to the library by local collectors Morris Campbell and Lorraine Gould of Wellington.
“We’re pretty fortunate that people like Lorraine and Morris are happy to loan their precious memorabilia to us,” Simone said.
The items will remain on display until May 19.
