They came in their hundreds to mark the Centenary of Public High School Education in Dubbo.
At Sunday’s remembrance service student leaders from the three campuses of Dubbo College and representatives of the Bindyi Club - the association for ex-students of Dubbo High School and Dubbo College - lay wreaths at the cenotaph.
Rosa-May Williams-Karam, vice-captain of Dubbo College Senior Campus, said it was a privilege to be able attend the centenary celebrations.
“It’s been an eye-opener to see how the education system has changed over time,” she said.
Ruby Riach, who attended Dubbo High School from 1939 to 1943, said today there was tremendous variety of opportunities for students to continue their education.
“I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to go to high school,” she said.
“Many students my age did not have that opportunity.”
Miss Riach said the weekend had been a great occasion.
“People have been enjoying each other’s company, reliving school days,” she said.
John Morris said it had been a great weekend.
“I ran into a fellow last night that I hadn’t seen since I left school,” he said.
“He’d gone into the air force and that was the last I saw of him until yesterday.
“That’s 55 years ago now, so it was good to catch up.”
