Coming off a thumping loss to Gilgandra in round 1 few would have given the Trangie Maggies much hope against the Gulgong Terriers, a side that has been the premiers and runner up over the past two seasons.
How wrong they were with the Magpies digging deep in front of their home crowd to register a memorable 22 to 12 win over the visitors.
To make the day even a more outstanding one for the club their league tag side also claimed the two competition points, running away with a 40 points to nil triumph.
At the other end of the Group the Baradine Magpies atoned for their first round loss to Gulgong with a solid 42 to 22 victory over the Coolah Kangaroos after going to the sheds at the break as 22 to 10 leaders, the first half be a spirited affair that saw three players (two Coolah, one Baradine) gain some “reflection time”.
Three North West Youth League games preceded the first grade game at Baradine These games saw a win going to Gunnedah over Baradine, whilst Gilgandra downed Tamworth Collegians and North Tamworth proved to be too strong for Gulgong.
A bruising encounter under lights at Coonamble on Friday night opened proceedings for round 2 of the Christie and Hood Castlereagh League competition, with the Bears playing host to their arch rivals, the Gilgandra Panthers.
It was no place for the faint hearted as the two teams (as per usual) tore into one another with gusto but in the end it was to be the Panthers who came out on top, scoring seven tries to three to take the game 34 to 18.
They may however pay a big price for the win with a number of their players suffering injuries during the torrid affair.
The remaining game saw Coonabarabran come away with the points after defeating the Dunedoo Swans 50 points to 28 at Dunedoo.
The Swannettes maintained their red hot form to run away to a 52 to 6 win and remain at the top of the league tag table.
There will be a general bye for Easter this weekend before round 3 games will be played on Sunday 23rd April instead of the normal Saturday games due to the Western Rams representative games, featuring Christie and Hood Castlereagh League teams, being played at Parkes on Saturday 22nd April.
