Westhaven began in 1957 as a school for children with intellectual disabilities. The first Westhaven ‘sheltered workshop’ was established in 1970 when the need to find employment for the young people emerged.
Ms White’s son Matthew has been a client with Westhaven for 40 years.
“It’s still the same place really. It’s the people who make it and they’re so caring and so patient,” she said.
Ms White said she was grateful to be able to live close to her son, and he was a “lucky lucky man”, she said for having been involved with Westhaven.
The organisation kicked off its birthday celebrations on Friday night with a disco. It will be followed by events such as the biennial ball, and a lawn bowls day.
