Ellis’ time in charge of the side has coincided with a switch of focus to younger players, and giving them a taste of senior cricket.
And while the side for Sunday’s match against Narromine has some older faces, there is still plenty of youth for Ellis to work with.
“That’s the most pleasing aspect for me,” Ellis said.
“Seeing someone like Nick Karydis, who was playing second grade, establish himself at club level and also at the Brewery Shield level, he was the Player of the the Year last season and that was outstanding. Now there’s guys like Pat Berryman and Tom Barber, young guys who I’m sure will step up and another who’s been there is Blake Watmore and it’s great to have him lining up again.”
Ellis added he was particularly excited about seeing Souths’ leg spinner Sam Fraser get a taste of senior representative cricket while Ben Knaggs, Justin Knudsen, Dan French and Ben Semmler are all Whitney Cup regulars.
English duo Jake Caudwell and Lewis Matthews round out the squad to take on Narromine, a side Ellis said is “never easy” to play.
“We’ll have to bring our A-game,” he said. “Narromine play some good cricket and recently they beat Nyngan, who won the Brewery Shield last season.”
