About 150 of those are deemed to be “roughing it”.
On Wednesday, police from the Orana Local Area Command did their bit to help, donating two crates worth of their boots to provide footwear for underprivileged people in the community.
The donation was made to Mission Australia representatives.
“To have the NSW Police, and in our case the Orana command come on board to help the less fortunate in our community is great,” Mission’s Patrick Duley said.
“The sense of caring these people feel when something like this happens is great, and it not only gives them a good pair of shoes but also it boosts self-esteem.”
Orana LAC’s Inspector Dan Skelly said helping the community is what police do.
“We live in the community too and we try to help where we can, when we can,” he said. “We come across the people roughing it in Dubbo on a regular basis and if we can do something to help them we’re happy to do it.”
