About 12.40am police officers from the Canobolas Local Area Command were patrolling Bathurst Road following reports a car had failed to pay for petrol at a nearby service station, when they saw a Holden Commodore allegedly travelling at high speed.
While the officers were driving on the Mitchell Highway near the intersection of Dairy Creek Road, they collided with the Commodore at a bend in the road and the police truck rolled over.
Initial investigations suggest prior to the accident the driver of the Commodore had crashed into a guardrail and come to rest in the middle of the road.
The driver of the Commodore, a woman believed to be aged in her late 20s or early 30s, and her passenger, a man also believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, were treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics before being taken to Orange hospital.
The pair, who had non life-threatening injuries, were assisting police with their inquiries.
The two male police officers were treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Orange hospital as a precaution.
They were released a short time later.
The Mitchell Highway was closed in both directions between Dairy Creek Road and the Northern Distributor until about 10am yesterday while an investigation was underway.
Inspector Dave Harvey said police wanted to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident.
“The investigation is being conducted by the Crash Investigation Unit from Bathurst,” he said.
“If anyone did see anything they should call Crimestoppers or Orange police.”
