It comes after a 14-year-old was arrested near the skate park at Bourke about 8.30pm Tuesday for allegedly throwing a glass bottle at a passing truck.
Detective Inspector Scott Parker from Darling River Local Area Command, said the truck’s windscreen smashed and the driver was sprayed with glass.
Fortunately, he said, the driver avoided serious injury and was able to stop safely without crashing into anything.
“Following the report, police responded and located the offending male,” Detective Inspector Parker said.
“The young male has been charged with intentionally throwing an object at a vehicle, causing a risk to the safety of a person, and malicious damage.
“The young male is subject to strict bail conditions including curfew and is prohibited from entering the skate park and surrounds. He will appear before the Bourke Children’s Court in May.”.
Detective Inspector Parker said it was just one of a series of incidents involving children police had been called to during the school holidays.
“Police are also investigating a similar incident that occurred on March 31, 2015,” he said.
“Police are confident of an arrest in this matter and continue to investigate.”
Detective Inspector Parker said police were appealing to “a small number of families in Bourke”, particularly parents and carers, to be responsible for their children.
“The offenders are young boys from Bourke who should not be in public during the night,” he said.
“Children left unsupervised in public typically fall into a life of crime and dysfunction.
“The lack of parental support continues the spiral of educational, employment and social disadvantage.
“Strong, respectful families build strong youth. Stand up for your family and children.”
