Hamilton he led a Mercedes clean sweep of the front row for the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park with his German teammate Nico Rosberg qualifying second fastest, albeit at a respectful distance.
Sebastian Vettel, the fourth quickest in Saturday's qualifying, begins his Ferrari career on the second row of the grid, alongside third fastest man Felipe Massa in a Williams.
Hamilton's superiority was marked, the world champion having a 0.6 of a second advantage over Rosberg, with Massa 0.8 seconds behind him and the rest further adrift.
Australian Daniel Ricciardo was badly hampered throughout Friday and Saturday's practice sessions because of engine problems with his Red Bull car, but he showed character and no little talent to make the best of a bad situation to take seventh place in a time of 1.28.329, some two seconds slower than Hamilton's 1.26.327.
Ricciardo at least made it into the top 10: his Russian teammate Daniil Kvyat will start from 13th position on his debut for Red Bull.
