The breakfast was part of Dubbo Presbyterian Church's Good News Week, which organiser David Ferres said revolved around discovering who Jesus was.
About 60 people were at the Dubbo RSL Memorial Club for the talk and buffet.
Warrant Officer Lawler, who worked on F111s and operated drones in Afghanistan said his discussion included how his Christianity assisted others during his work overseas and held strong when his 27-year-old son died of a brain tumour.
"I can say to people even though we've been hit with these tragedies we can still have faith. It would have been very easy to go the other way and spiral downwards," he said.
This year was the first time the church had held a Good News Week and Mr Ferres said activities ranged from trivia to lawn bowls to ultimate frizbee.
Mr Ferres the range of events was designed to ensure their would be something for men, something for women, something for everyone.
He said there had been a mixed response to the week with some events, such as the breakfast, having a great turn out, while others had to be cancelled due to a lack of interest.
