Emergency services were called to the Parkes Street residence about 8.15am Friday after another man was seen running from the property carrying a whipper snipper.
Paramedics treated the 47-year-old resident, who was lying on the floor with a deep cut to his head.
He was taken to Wellington Hospital then to Orange Health Service, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.
Orana Local Area Command Acting Inspector Justin Falkiner said the incident was shocking.
"It's a concern that someone has been attacked in their own home and that's why we are urgently appealing for information regarding this matter," he said.
Acting Inspector Falkiner said a witness had reported seeing a man with a whipper snipper leave the property, but at this stage it was yet to be revealed what weapon had been used in the attack.
Detectives set up a crime scene at the house and specialist forensic officers had scoured the scene for evidence.
Neighbours had also been canvassed as part of the investigation.
Detectives were continuing to make inquiries and appealed for anyone with information to contact Wellington Police Station on 02 6840 2099 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Meanwhile the attack prompted an angry response from residents who took to social media to express their disgust.
"This town is getting way, way out of control, coming in close competition to Mt Druitt, sadly," wrote one.
"Hope the mongrels are caught," another wrote.
A third wrote: "I hope they catch whoever it was and fast too, Germs like that don't deserve to breath the same air as us, or walk around free, that's for sure."
