Dubbo Local Court heard the man had terrified the woman, the newborn and a nine-year-old child in a Gowrie Avenue home.
Neighbours called emergency services when they heard glass breaking, a man yelling and a woman screaming.
When police arrived the man brandished a glass bottle and told officers to "---- off".
He reached into his jumper and produced a knife, holding the weapon at shoulder height with the blade pointed at police.
The man ignored an order to drop the knife and moved towards police. An officer deployed a Taser due to fears for the safety of the woman and children.
The man fell to the ground when he was hit with the electroshock. The bottle and knife were secured and the offender handcuffed.
While police were standing him up, the man lunged forward with his head and struck the bathroom window, causing the glass to smash.
The man pleaded guilty when he was brought before Magistrate Andrew Eckhold on charges of common assault, damaging property and using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.
A solicitor from the Aboriginal Legal Service said Community Corrections officers wanted the man to undergo a mental health assessment.
Magistrate Eckhold said jail was the only appropriate sentence.
"It may be able to served in the community as an intensive correction order if your mental health issues can be explored," the magistrate said.
"You may not remember, but what you did was appalling."
The charges were adjourned to February 4.
The court heard the man had a complex personal story and a lengthy history of drug and alcohol abuse.
Prosecution facts said the man had been drinking beer as he sat watching television with the woman.
An verbal argument ensued and the woman locked all the doors and windows when the man left the house.
He returned and wanted to be let in. The woman got off the lounge with the newborn in her arms and looked out the window.
The man yelled "This glass isn't going to protect you" and threw a bottle at the window. The pane of glass smashed and the bottle landed inside the house.
The woman ran into the bathroom with the baby and called for another child to follow. She phoned triple-0 as the man came down the hallway swearing and yelling.
The man slapped the woman as she tried to protect the newborn in the corner of the room. Prosecution facts said the man told the woman to put the baby down so he could "get into her".
The woman remained in the corner with the baby and appealed for the man to stop.
He was still yelling at the woman when police arrived.
