Less than 24 hours after a myriad of prizes, including a car, were up for grabs Arthur Hosking achieved the sport's holy grail during his nine-hole round in the Custom Steel Super 6 competition.

Adding to the irony of the situation Hosking owns Custom Steel, and while he concedes he's not out to win his own competition he said landing an ace made for a nice afternoon on the course.

Hosking joined with Bullseye organiser Ivor Trapman, Alan Wykes and Peter Christie for Monday's round and on the second hole of the afternoon he had his moment.

The par-3 11th hole was playing to roughly 120m with a tough pin placement, and while Trapman joked his playing partner needed a 4-iron to get the distance, he did in fact pull out a 7-iron when he approached the tee.

"An A-grader would probably use a wedge or 9-iron, I'd usually use an 8 but I pulled out the 7-iron because there was a cross-wind blowing and I thought I needed some extra club," Hosking said.

"I hit the ball pretty nicely, it felt good off the stick and when I watched it in flight and go onto the green I thought I might stroll up and have a 10-footer for par.

"Because the pin was behind the bunker on the right-hand side I didn't think it had gone in. We got up to the green we couldn't see my ball, and Ivor's ball had gone over the back so I asked him if mine was there too.

"He said it wasn't, so I checked the hole and it was in there."

Monday's ace wasn't the first Hosking has landed, and he admitted he had been lucky since taking the sport up about 16 years ago.

"I only started playing golf when I was 51, and I'm 67 now," he said.

"I know blokes that have played their whole lives and haven't got one and I've got a couple now, so I feel quite lucky.

"You need that bit of luck because every golfer aims for the pin when they line up on a par-3 and it's very rare that you actually get it in.

"The strange thing is Ivor organised that event on Sunday where the aim was for people to land a hole-in-one and then I came out the next day and got one."
