The parade of beautifully-crafted lights progressed to Victoria Park, the result of a burning drive to deliver a community festival to the city.
The DREAM Lantern Parade's destination was also the scene of the DREAM Twilight Markets, which organisers reported drew a crowd "significantly larger" than last year.
Together the two occasions designed to delight the senses, brought an end to the 2014 DREAM Festival.
Festival vice-chairwoman Anne Field said they were "absolutely thrilled" with the response to the finale.
Stallholder numbers tripled to more than 60 for the DREAM Twilight Markets presented by Bosweb, Mrs Field said.
"The range of stalls was wonderful," she said.
"(We had) really interesting food, arts and crafts, and of course the Flying Toasties."
There were a "few tense moments" when a strong wind blew up and a few drops of rain fell but the weather did not stop the DREAM Lantern Parade, presented by the Outlook Cafe.
"Our fantastic rhino commissioned by Taronga Western Plains Zoo came out on its first official appearance," Mrs Field said.
"And then all the 300-odd lanterns came behind it with the St John's College marching band and dancers.
"There was a very positive response from the crowd, with people lining Talbragar Street and watching from the balcony of the Pastoral Hotel and the Castlereagh."
The DREAM Festival celebrated administration on Friday night with a performance of award-winning show Reception: The Musical, which prompted enthusiastic applause from the audience."Bethany (Simons) is a delightful performer and incredibly talented," Mrs Field said.
"It was a pleasure to bring her back to Dubbo."
The festival with an entertainment, arts and music focus secured $15,000 from major sponsor Macquarie Credit Union this year.
Mrs Field said the festival had received "amazing volunteer support" from a range of sources and that the committee's focus would move to the last of its fine-dining events to be held on November 11 at Taronga Western Plains Zoo.
