Local trainer Clint Lundholm was almost lost for words yesterday after his two-year-old gelding Any Blinkin' Day stormed home to win the $20,000 Kings Hall Jewellers Silver Goblet at Dubbo Turf Club in his very first race.
A healthy crowd was in attendance for the running of the day's main race and after sitting in behind early in the 1120-metre event Daniel Northey made his move as they entered the home straight and bust through the centre of the field to win by three-quarters of a length.
The $17 chance proved to be a surprise winner but after showing solid form without being spectacular in his trials, Lundholm said he had a good feeling about the race.
"It feels pretty good," he said.
"We were pretty confident that he'd run well, it's difficult when you come up against horses that have run more races, it's a bit different from a trial. Both trials he was quiet, did nothing too much but we just gave him some confidence and it's worked."
The Greg Ryan-ridden Not One Doubt ($2.70) and Matthew Cahill onboard One Last Poet ($3.20) were the only runners under $10 and both began well, along with the Max Crockett-trained Saboteur.
Ken Dunbar made a move on Raised To Duel as they approached the bend but One Last Poet still led.
As they entered the straight Northey made his move and powered through the middle of the field to seal the maiden win.
"It was a good ride, he kept him out of trouble and it was a good, patient ride," Lundholm said of Northey's efforts.
"As they were approaching the bend I was just waiting for him to pop his head through and once he did I thought he'd give it a shake and about a furlong out I knew it was wrapped up, he got them."
Lundholm thanked owner Errol French at the presentation, with the veteran owner sticking by the trainer through the early stages with a number of horses.
"Early on you don't have numbers and you struggle here and there but Errol has backed me and we finally found one that's going to win us a few more," he said.
"I'm not going to go for the stars just yet but he's (Any Blinkin' Day) won his first race here against some handy horse and beaten them well so we'll take him home now and have a look where to go next."
Awild Enemy's Pick (Catherine Markwort, $21) finished strongly to take second while One Last Poet was a further length and a quarter back in third.
