The man was brought before Dubbo Local Court in handcuffs yesterday.
Dressed in a high-visibility work shirt, shorts and boots he sat impassively in the dock before Magistrate Andrew Eckhold.
No pleas were entered to four charges of aggravated sexual assault and a single charge of commit an act of indecency.
Police allege the man committed an act of indecency on a 10-year-old boy at Mascot between September 1, 1997 and March 31, 1998.
The aggravated sexual assault charges are alleged to have occurred in Sydney in 1997, 1998 and 2000.
Police allege the offences were aggravated because the man knew the child had not consented to intercourse.
The accused did not make an application to be released from custody.
Bail was formally refused by the court.
All charges were adjourned to Central Local Court on September 10.
Magistrate Eckhold ordered the prosecution to complete a brief of evidence by August 27.
The man showed no emotion as he was led from the court by Corrective Services officers.
