"It's an overwhelming experience, I don't think I've done too much more than other people in my field," he said.
An established sports broadcaster with the ABC since 1988, Mr Gavel has worked for a range of sporting events including six Olympic Games, five Commonwealth Games and two Rugby World Cups.
Not to mention also covering various rugby internationals, NRL games, basketball, netball, football, rowing, track cycling and boxing.
Mr Gavel said that if it wasn't for his time in Dubbo, he would not be where he is today.
"Working in a regional area really teaches people about strong work ethics," Mr Gavel said.
Mr Gavel said he has a strong tie with Dubbo, not only for kicking off his career, but remaining a home base for his family.
"I started off at 2DU doing work experience in 1980, but they weren't able to employ me so I went off to Mount Isa and Townsville for work," Mr Gavel said.
He returned home shortly and accepted a position with 2DU where he worked as a disk jockey before he moved on to the newsroom.
"I covered a lot of rugby league in the Group 11 competition through the mid 1980s," he said.
"I then moved to television in 1987 and have been covering sport ever since."
Now a current board member of the Ronald McDonald House in Canberra, Mr Gavel is actively involved in many charities where he has attended functions as a guest speaker or a master of ceremonies.
