Perhaps it may be time to put the carbon tax in proportion. As shown in the diagram available on the following website from the Australia Institute: (www.tai.org.au/downloads/Great_big_new_tax.pdf), according to current modelling the government current modelling the government will receive less revenue from the carbon tax than they do from alcohol and tobacco - and it will cost the average household less than they already choose to less than they already choose to spend on their mobile phones.

In fact, once the tax cut or benefit increase kicks in many Australian households will actually be better off than before (although who knows whether they will be the ones who need it most). As the Australia Institute commented - a great big tax or a great big distraction?
Knowing our politicians, I think I know which way I am leaning.
