Australian government changes to the aviation security arrangements - introduced on July 1, 2012 - now apply to Dubbo, and the upgrades are essential as the Dubbo City Regional Airport prepares for the introduction of larger aircraft.
Dubbo City Council's Director Corporate Development Ken Rogers said from March, due to additional security measures, passengers should check in 60 minutes before flight departure.
"In terms of security requirements, travelling via Dubbo City Regional Airport will soon be similar to that experienced at Sydney Airport - only even friendlier. Security screening will be required of all passengers, including their checked and carry-on baggage," he said.
Mr Rogers said the additional security was required by law due to the size of the new aircraft.
"This presents several benefits to Dubbo; the larger aircraft will result in an additional 384 seats per week on the Sydney to Dubbo return service, or potentially an extra 19,968 passengers every year - and a significant injection into the local economy," he said.
"Additionally, 10 permanent positions will be created to operate the new security screening equipment."
Mr Rogers said council was taking this opportunity not only to implement the necessary upgrades at the Dubbo City Regional Airport, but to plan for future growth.
"Council is aware of the region's desire to see new flight routes introduced at Dubbo City Regional Airport. We recognise that Dubbo's strength is its frequency of flights and its opportunity is competition. As such, we are continuing discussions with several airlines with a view to attract additional routes," he said.
