THE Ambulance Service of New South Wales has encouraged the public to learn first aid.
Paramedics called for greater participation from the general public after having responded to 12 incidents where people have either drowned or nearly drowned and required assistance in the New Year.
An Ambulance Service of NSW spokesperson said although paramedics were professionals at medical intervention and CPR - it was quite often a member of the community or family who is first at the scene and commences life saving intervention.
He said knowing first aid could be the difference in saving a life.
