After weeks of intense double frame snooker at the Dubbo RSL Club, the Friday night final game for the Vern Traeger Memorial Trophy was set to add a new name to the prestigious honour board.
Old shark ‘Slippery’ Syd Morris was up against one of the young guns Tom Lawson.
In his first finals appearance Lawson set the pace of the game early on, before Morris brought his experience to the table and laid the groundwork for some stylish play.
At the end of the first frame which he took on the black, Morris went into the minor break narrowly ahead, and defending his continuous break, used the old guile and trickery to bring about the demise of Lawson’s plans.
The final result was a convincing 93-64 win to Morris, who now steps up to A-grade for the upcoming Club Championships.
He later paid tribute to his practice partner Bruce Schloeffel and congratulated Tom Lawson for making the final.
The other competition was in Thursday night’s 3-Ball handicap competition.
A group of 26 players competed for the weekly title and a great mix of senior players and young hopefuls took to the tables.
In the top half of the draw, stalwart Kevin ‘Bargie’ Bargmann forced his way through the likes of Allan Arnold, Rhett Stockdale, Chris Knee and Don Adams to make the final cut, while the lower half saw Ecky Eno fend off the challenges of Matty Wright, Bob Forrest, Bruce ‘Silver Fox’ Schloeffel and Glen Halbisch to join him.
In a tense final, after what had been a long and excellent night of snooker from all players, Bargmann managed to hold out Eno and take the prize with some superb shots, for which Eno had no answer.
Third place went to Halbisch, with Adams taking fourth position.
Meanwhile, players are reminded that the Club Championships start on October 1.
The draw is on display on the notice board.
First round players have less than two weeks to complete their knockout games.
