Forty students from the University of Technology Sydney spent their weekend beautifying Wongarbon as part of an eight-day, two-State project delivering community service work to regional areas.
They’d spent Saturday planting trees in the park and were up at 6.30am yesterday planting trees at the tank reserve with local boy Ben right alongside them.
The students were all volunteers on their way to Brisbane for a meeting with the Asia Pacific Student Service Association and would be stopping at a number of regional centres along the way to help out any way they could.
They contacted Dubbo City Council’s director community services Kathleen Oaks prior to the trip who then lined up their work at Wongarbon.
“Any opportunity like this is fantastic,” Ms Oaks said.
“We get big projects done when we’ve got plenty of manpower.”
She also said it had obviously had a positive influence on some local children.
“It’s just really nice being in a different place and being able to appreciate a very different landscape and way of life to what we’re used to,” UTS student Glenn O’Sullivan said.
