Former sport minister Richard Colbeck and Fairfax MP Ted O'Brien lost their positions on the Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (OCOG) after the coalition's election defeat earlier this month.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has written to the pair to alert them to the update but denies reports she kicked them out, with her office saying the change is automatic under the state's Olympic laws.

"Reports the Premier has 'booted' anyone from the OCOG board are just plain wrong," a representative of the premier told AAP on Wednesday.

"Government appointees cease their appointment when the government changes. That's normal.

"It's also normal for the premier and minister for the Olympics to write to the outgoing board members and thank them for their service."

Ms Wells, whose seat of Lilley covers northeast Brisbane, will be sworn in as federal sport minister on Wednesday.

She is expected to be appointed to the OCOG board by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The incoming minister said she was "surprised and thrilled" to be given the sport portfolio.

She had been reminded of the mental health benefits of regular exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic, starting a Park Run in her local area.

Ms Wells said she is looking forward to the 2032 Games.

"As Brisbane makes its recovery from floods, we're marching towards Brisbane 2032 to where sport also gives us the chance to shine on the world stage," she told ABC Radio on Wednesday.

"So that's going to be a really exciting one."

Labor MP Milton Dick is one possibility to replace Mr O'Brien on the Olympic committee.

Mr Dick, whose Oxley electorate covers southwest Brisbane, was part of the Australian Olympic delegation which travelled to Lausanne in Switzerland in 2019 as part of the 2032 bid.
