The mercy rule, used in Group 11 when a side leads by 60, came into effect again but it was only inside the final minute when Jack Smith sliced through a yawning gap to cross and force referee Daniel Thornton to blow full-time.
Jyie Chapman scored a hat-trick and set-up two other tries, one with a perfect flick pass to opposite centre Jeremy Thurston, but it was the manner of the performance that was most pleasing for the co-captain after last weekend's loss to Wellington.
The 28-8 defeat to the Cowboys had been the Fishies' first of the season and Chapman had labelled it the worst performance from CYMS in a number of years.
"We really had to show up today and put the work in after last week," Chapman said after Saturday's win.
"We had a point to prove here at home after getting dusted last week the way we did. We had to go up a gear.
"It was good defence and that attack was what we wanted to work on and I think it's starting to shine now."
Chapman scored his side's first try of the afternoon inside eight minutes at a cold and blustery Apex Oval and 12 minutes later he managed to get a ball away while heading towards the touch line to put Smith over for his first of the day.
Those blows for Forbes were made more painful as fullback Mitch Andrews departed the match early on after again succumbing to an ongoing hamstring issue.

It had a severe impact on the attack as the Magpies had plenty of ball in the first 40 minutes but were unable to create many genuine try-scoring opportunities.
CYMS absorbed the pressure and scored again through returning prop Ben Marlin to make it 18-0 and while Hamish Astill was sent to the bin just before the break following a strong of penalties it did little to slow to scoring.
Forbes captain and halfback Nick Greenhalgh also spent time in the bin the second half for dissent and CYMS capitalised, as Chapman completed his hat-trick while also putting Thurtson in.
Greenhalgh returned and his ball back against the angle led to Forbes' first try for Jake Stenhouse but that was as god as it got for the visitors.
Brydon Ramien went on to grab a double, Billy Sing also went across, and before Smith put the icing on the cake in the final stages he also unselfishly passed to Riley Wake while heading over the line to give the teenager a try in his first grade debut.
It was another strong all-round showing from Smith, who has looked far more comfortable in recent weeks since switching from lock to halfback.
"The goal was to not take the foot off the pedal," Chapman said.
"We tried to work on our attack and we've got the talent there but we've got to start working.
"We've got young Smithy and he's a freakish talent. He's a young fella and he came into the game and made it his own but I just think he needs to order the bigger boys around a bit more, but we'll get there."
Chapman laughed about his own five-star showing in attack, joking he turned back the clock to a time where creating highlight-reel worthy moments was the norm.
"It's been awhile since I've got a couple like that but it felt alright. The young fellas are starting to catch up a bit," he said, before talking about his flick pass.
"It brought back some memories to the days of Johnny Grey (on the wing) but it was great."
Brad Pickering also kicked nine of 11 conversions attempted for CYMS in a solid return from injury.
While there was smiles all over the faces of the CYMS players at full-time, it was another low point for Forbes.
The Magpies were expected to be a premiership threat again this season but their finals hopes are now all but over as they have just the one win to their name and have matches against Macquarie, Narromine and Parkes remaining before a final round bye.
"It is really frustrating," halfback Greenhalgh said.
"We said it in the sheds, we can't train any better but it's about going out on the field putting an 80-minute performance in.
"Losing Mitchy hurts. He makes a difference to any team and I think the boys might have got a little bit down when they saw him go off but we have to be better. We've got guys who can do the job."
