Not only one of the premier forwards in Group 11, Thompson is a previous captain-coach at the Jets and his wealth of experience has already helped Chad Jacobson and Ryan Richardson.
The long-serving Jets duo stepped up to take on the captain-coach's role together after Dylan Hill was forced to step down due to medical reasons in January.
"He brings that calming influence on the field and that leadership and experience around the boys," Jacobson said of Thompson.
"He brings that in defence and attack. I'm glad I'm not tackling him."

While the Jets have again battled for numbers at times during the pre-season things have been far more positive in recent weeks.
The side kicks off its season at home against Macquarie on Sunday and Jacobson said he and Ricardson are looking forward to leading their side out for the first time in a competition match.
"It's a new challenge and something neither of us have done before," he said of being captain-coach.
"We felt a bit more comfortable doing it together and it's been a good challenge and we're looking forward to getting out there.
"Hopefully it all goes well, we stay injury free, and get a few wins."
Boosting the Jets' chances of getting a few wins is the passionate Narromine faithful who are always there no matter how the side is travelling.Jacobson said.
"It's good we're at home for round one. That helps us majorly on the paddock, having that home advantage."
The action at Cale Oval starts with the league tag at 11am on Sunday.
