Oberon native Mirza Muratovic scores first goal on his Welington Phoenix debut

Starting in the midfield for the Phoenix, his goal came just before the half-time break against Sydney FC at WIN Stadium in Wollongong.

Originally, the broadcaster's feed was interrupted by an unknown error, but footage resurfaced late in the game, meaning Muratovic's special moment could be revisited by himself, fans, friends and family.

Right back Tim Payne found the ball in the corner, whipped a cross into the box, which found Muratovic, who hit it first time on his right foot.

The shot hit the left-hand post, but bounced into the back of the net, to make it 1-all in the first minute of stoppage time, cancelling out Calem Nieumwenhof's screamer on his A-League debut.

After the match, Wellington Phoenix coach Ufuk Talay said he's hoping Muratovic will be able to improve and score more goals.

"It's always great for young players to get game time and score goals, so I thought he did well in the time that he played," he said.

"Hopefully he can build on that."

While Sydney FC's Luke Brattan would score the winner with a lovely free kick 10 minutes into the second-half, Talay was pleased with the performance from all his players, but he believed a draw would've been a fair result.

"I have belief in my players that they can do it and they've shown they can do it previously," he said.

"I think I'd like them to be a little more braver when they have the ball going forward, like we did in the second half.

"That's something we can build on going forward."

Muratovic made his A-League debut for Brisbane Roar on December 28, 2019, playing 13 games and scoring two goals, before being released from his contract.

Fellow Western product Rhyan Grant also featured in the match for Sydney FC.

Muratovic and the Nix are back in action on Saturday, January 9, when they face new boys Macarthur FC at Campbelltown Stadium.
