"I've been entering stuff since I was the age of five and I've been on the committee since I was I was about 15. It's the best week of my life every year," Ms Shields said.
Ms Shields is one of the entrants in the 2019 Dubbo Showgirl competition. It aims to find someone who can represent young, regional women of NSW and promote the Dubbo Show.
For the 19-year-old, becoming the Dubbo Showgirl would allow her to better the community.
"I want to give back to the community and that gives me the opportunity to bring up those issues and try and make a solution for them. As you know we're in a drought at the moment, I want to tackles those issues head on with the community behind me and see what I can do," she said.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
Ms Shields was the Teenage Showgirl in 2015 and is on both the Teenage Showgirl and the Showgirl committees. She said earning the Teenage Showgirl title gave her the confidence to put her hand up this year.
It was also an opportunity to show the community it wasn't a pageant competition, Ms Shields said.
She said it had helped her develop, including increasing her confidence, but she was always looking to improve.
Giving back to her community is strong motivation for the showgirl entrant. Ms Shields is currently completing a Bachelor of Criminal Justice.
"I would like to work in Dubbo or a small country town. I feel like it would be more effective to help people rather than a larger community, for example Sydney," she said.
"I really want to help people. If I can make somebody's day a little bit better that's okay by me. Give a little bit of good back into the world. As you see on the news lit's always negative so if I can make somebody smile throughout the day that's a big achievement for myself."
By being involved in the show, Ms Shields is also carrying on her family tradition. Both her mum and grandma entered the show, and the 19-year-old said those skills had been passed down.
"I can bake now, I can cook and that's a really good skill to have as an adult. When you move out you're able to do those things," she said.
The winner of the Dubbo Showgirl competition will be announced on Saturday, May 25, prior to the official opening of the Dubbo Show.
