Community group funding
Community groups from across the region received a big boost this week with two rounds of grant funding being awarded. More than $330,000 worth of grants was awarded to 22 community groups, sports clubs and service organisations as part of the Stronger Communities Fund – Community Grants program. Two projects, the Hear our Heart Ear Bus Project and construction of a new amenities block for Mumbil Community Hall received the maximum grant available of $50,000.
Organisations that provide valuable social and educational services such as Wellington Connect, the Police Citizens Youth Club and Dubbo and District Kindergarten also received significant grants which will support increased participation in various programs. Sporting groups across Dubbo and Wellington were also well represented with Australian Football, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Softball, Junior Rugby Union, Senior and Junior Soccer, Tennis, Netball and Touch clubs receiving grants totalling $82,900. Congratulations also go to all the community groups who were successful in securing funding from the first round of Council’s Community Financial Assistance Program. Council dedicates $30,000 to the program each year to help ease the burden of not-for-profit organisations that contribute to our community and this is the first round of funding Council has to offer for the 2017/2018 financial year. This rounds recipients were: Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society, Dubbo Legacy, Cancer Council NSW, Dubbo District Concert Band, Dubbo Theatre Company Inc., 1st Dubbo Scout Group, BaptistCare NSW and ACT, Uniting (NSW, ACT), Older Womens Network, The Westhaven Association and Rotary Club of Dubbo. It was fantastic to present so many great and varied groups with the cheques this week and I look forward to seeing what they go on to achieve.

Council always wants to hear from the community and there are currently a number of plans and policies on public exhibition that we want your feedback on. Currently on exhibition is the Wellington Destination brand which was developed after extensive research and consultation with targeted stakeholders in the Wellington community, including businesses, industry groups, residents, community and cultural leaders and tourism operators.
The development of a standalone destination brand for Wellington has long been a priority and was identified in several of the former Wellington Council strategies and research papers. The draft concept plan includes options for the upgrade to the site and surrounding grounds as well as the development of a Visitor Experience Centre. We want input from the community and visitors who have, or will use the facility and what improvements they would like considered as part of this, or future upgrades.
Excellent news for the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre with $163,467 of funding from the Liquor and Gaming NSW Arts and Culture Infrastructure Grants Program for a new operable acoustic dividing door. The new dividing door will make the convention centre a more versatile and accessible space for weddings, community, cultural events, exhibitions, meetings, workshops and conferences.
New director welcomed
Welcome to Chris Devitt who has started in the role of Director of Infrastructure and Operations. Chris comes to Dubbo Regional Council from Orange City Council where he was the Director of Technical Services and prior to that he was General Manager of Forbes Shire Council.
