Recent upgrades to Dubbo pool had made it more user friendly, Dubbo Regional Council manager recreation planning and programs Tracey Whillock said.
“The purchase of an aquatic chair and portable pool lift, and the refurbished disability amenities which include a change table, allow for greater access to the aquatic centre by people with a disability,” she said.
Parent Anna Minney said the change table was excellent, and would have a significant impact on her and her son Issac’s time at the pool.
“It means the difference of probably being able to go to the pool or not,” Ms Minney said.
“Issac’s incontinent and we can’t have him changed on the floor of the toilets or the grass. He’s 10 now, he needs some dignity.”
As it was automatic, if Isaac was bought to the pool by someone else they would be able to assist him without injuring themselves, Ms Minney said.
She said it would also provide greater independence for those in a wheelchair, and give everyone equal privacy while at the pool.
The idea of the automatic change table at the pool was bought to council by Miranda Richardson, Ms Minney said.
Ms Whillock said council was committed to providing sporting facilities which were inclusive of all the community and provided positive experiences.
