THIS year marks 50 years since John Clarke started teaching and on Tuesday his co-workers at James Sheahan Catholic High School celebrated his 70th birthday.

“I enjoy doing what I’m doing and I’m happy to do it for many years to come,” he said.
Initially Mr Clarke taught geography, history and economics. But about 30 years into his career he wanted a change and followed his daughters Michelle Whiteley and Helen Clarke into teaching Japanese.
He has been teaching Japanese exclusively for almost 15 years and still works with his daughters, something he has no plans to change.
“It’s good, we have a very good working relationship. One of my daughters is the acting assistant principal so she’s my boss and the other is the subject coordinator, so she’s my boss,” he said.
His daughter Helen said they all enjoy teaching together and her father was a great mentor.
“He loves his job, the kids love him and I know if you ask him for some help you are going to be on the right track,” she said.
