“It’s important because often the recipients of these charities, they’re very humble people and they don’t always speak up in their lives,” Ms Ettershank said.
The 23-year-old said she was part of organising events and raising money for Aussie Helpers, Can Assist, Buy a Bale and the Blackdog Institute when she was at university.
Now, Ms Ettershank wants to become Dubbo’s showgirl to promote the show and the benefits it brings to the community.
“For me, it is really about representing my community. I do enjoy contributing, I like to see people benefiting from the little bit of time I can give,” she said.
“Showgirls get to voice their opinion on local and national issues. If you’re a showgirl people want you to speak up.”
Ms Ettershank works as a rail co-ordinator at Fletcher International Exports after obtaining a Bachelor of Resources and Agricultural Economics at the University of New England.
“The thing I loved about it most was that it’s not just a standard agriculture degree, it also covers a lot of economics as well, like food security,” she said.
Due to her age, Ms Ettershank said this would be the last year she would be eligible for the showgirl competition.
“It’s the last year for me so I thought, ‘why not?’,” she said. “It’s my first year out of university, I’ve done some travelling. I feel like I’ve just had enough experience to have an impact.”
