Mr Bennett was recognised for his service to local government and to the community of the Lachlan Shire.
Deputy mayor of Lachlan Shire Council for four terms, Mr Bennett was a councillor from 1991 to 2008.
To this day, he is an active member of the Tottenham Progress Association.
He was also a founding member of the Tottenham Tidy Towns Committee, which has been running since 1996.
Mr Bennett's list of contributions to the community of the Lachlan Shire are impressive, including his membership on the Tottenham Historical Society, Tottenham Tourist Committee and Tottenham Health Advisory Council.
He as also been elected into leadership positions in groups, such as the president of the Lachlan Advisory Group Inc, chairman of the Tottenham Multipurpose Centre Steering Committee and chairman of the Tottenham Hospital Redevelopment Committee.
Mr Bennett was also awarded the Tottenham Citizen of the Year award on Australia Day in 2008.
It was these achievements, plus many more, which was what spurred the Tottenham community to nominate Mr Bennett for an Order of Australia Medal.
