SPIRITS were high as participants of the Dubbo and District Relay for Life fought fatigue to continue walking through the night in support of cancer awareness, raising more than $78,000.

From Saturday through to Sunday cancer survivors, carers and other members of the community dressed to compliment the event's colourful safari theme chose to walk instead of sleep amounting to many hundreds to laps around Victoria Park's No. 1 Oval.
Dubbo and District Relay for Life committee chairman Noel Manning said some participants' efforts walking laps were extraordinary.
"People just kept lapping until they dropped with some doing over 100 laps," he said.
"One girl almost brought me to tears, she did two laps after having chemotherapy."
About 400 people completed the final lap yesterday morning demonstrating the commitment of the Dubbo community to the annual event.
Mr Manning said many people signed up on Friday to participate in the event.
"Well over 500 people participated, as of Friday we had 500 then another 100 people registered," he said.
"It has been a very good year, as good as if not better than last year."
The money fundraised and the more than 50 teams participating were greater numbers than expected by the organisers.
"Not everyone decorated their tent area but there were a lot of onesies floating around," Mr Manning said.
"The kids really loved it."
The final figure raised at the local event to the benefit of Cancer Council will be finalised in the next couple of weeks.
Mr Manning congratulated the people who volunteered their time to the fundraising event.
"The committee worked really hard and they have done magnificent work," he said.
