Since the introduction of kerbside recycling in July, waste collected through the drop-off centre service has reduced from 137 tonnes per month in 2009/2010 to 25 tonnes per month for the year to date in 2010/2011.
Urban drop-off centres on Depot Road, High Street and Birch Avenue will be closed on January 31, 2011 after a recommendation from council’s waste management service was adopted at Monday night’s monthly meeting.
A drop-off centre on Cobbora Road was shut down in July of this year.
Free drop-off centres for receipt of bulky cardboard and mixed domestic recyclables will continue to be available at the Whylandra depot and JR Richards and Son will continue operations free of charge.
Drop-off centres will also continue for rural residents in the villages of Wongarbon, Eumungerie and Ballimore.
“Council’s recyclable drop-off service has been reviewed recently, following the roll-out of kerbside collections in July this year,” Dubbo mayor Allan Smith said.
“This service has been overwhelmingly supported by the Dubbo community, so it is seen as a sign of the times that some drop-off centres will close.”
Council will also investigate the option of creating a centralised drop-off service in the future.
