Only one win from eight games came the way of Western under-12s and 14s while the under-16s went without success. However the 16s did have five draws, the biggest number by any team cover all divisions.
Winner of the 16s division was Metro Far North and their only loss was to Metro East and a draw with Western - which was a great result for the host girls.
While they didn’t much success they certainly weren’t disgraced and were competitive in every game. Lucky certainly plays a great part in these carnivals, Western went without on this occasion.
Each coach said this week their preparation wasn’t the best it could be with players from all teams drawn from over a wide area, hence the difficulty of getting them together for training on a regular basis.
Coached by Paul Morris from Bathurst and managed by Trent and Gwenny Asimus, the Western 12s contained three Dubbo girls - Prue Anderson, Indianna Asimus and Nikea Goodwin. They did have a younger side this year, some aged just 10 and 11, and they finished equal last on the ladder with Southern.
Western’s one win came on Wednesday against Metro North by 2-1. They also had a draw.
While they scored four goals, they finished with the worst defensive record of the nine teams having conceded 13 goals.
In the under-14s, Western finished with one wins and two draws for five competition points. They were second last, with Metro Far South down the bottom.
Western played under Bathurst based coach Graham Ross with Gaye Wykes from Dubbo his manager.
They also had trouble finding the back of the net scoring just four goals and having 11 scored against them. Western’s lone win was also against Metro North by 2-1.
In the Western side were Natasha Wykes, Jessica Berryman, Annie Huggins, Tayla Braithwaite from Dubbo as well as Erin O’Leary (Peak Hill).
Western also finished second last in the under-16s, a side coached by Glen Stedman from Orange with Tracy Sherman (Bathurst) his manager.
Scoring goals was also a problem for this team. They scored just three goals in their eight games and had 10 against, certainly not the worst by any means.
Their five draws were certainly frustrating for the coach and players.
The Western 16s contained Jane Winter, Clare Montgomery, Danielle Sykes and Courtney Johnson (Dubbo); Rinah Gersbach from Wellington and Coonamble’s Tor-Lee Callaghan.
