The Cowboys chanced their arm and went to the air at every opportunity against Macquarie in the preliminary final at Kennard Park on Sunday and came up trumps when Damien Kelly’s pinpoint accuracy turned to gold and in turn sent the Raiders out of the reckoning.
In general play fullback Richard Peckham was just as menacing and time and time again the Raiders were forced to turn around the chase the ball down field.
The same ploy has also been used by Parkes this season with Dennis Moran a master of his trade and his presence with the ball in hand will create some anxious moments for the Cowboys.
Such was the success of Wellington’s game plan against the Raiders, one could safely assume they will use the same tactics against the Spacemen.
Both sides have big packs who are more comfortable with the hard stuff up the middle but if they have to go extra yards and are turned around to chase, then their energy reserves are not likely to last.
When that happens mistakes and ill discipline comes into play and in turn this converts into points.
Playing five-eighth outside Trent Forrest on Sunday, Kelly was one their best. Thirty minutes into the game it was one of Kelly’s well-weighted chips that Adam McDermott fumbled. From the restart Forrest did the leg work and in an instant Chris Thompson was over near the posts.
More importantly was Kelly’s kicks into the right corner.
Just when a Kyle Webb try reduced the lead to four points (26-22) Kelly punted the ball over the line and young Corey Stanley out-jumped Anthony Toomey turned to score.
That try pushed the Cowboys out to 30-22 and made it doubly hard for the visitors to get back into the game.
But Kelly wasn’t finished yet and as the clock wound down he repeated the dose and again Stanley accepted the opportunity to score his third try. Wellington 34 Raiders 22 and their place in the grand final was assured.
Wellington’s other plus is having Richard Peckham also capable of big things with his kicking. One such drop out from the five-eighth went to the half-way line and Ash Conn knocked on. In the next set of six Nathan Smith scored after Peckham flicked the ball out from behind.
That meant Wellington scored four of their seven tries from kicks - good stuff if you can get away with it.
In the Parkes game plan for the big one, Moran’s kicking will also be important. he loves to dictate play and if finding position or creating mistakes he’ll be trying right till the end. The Spacemen also have half-back Dalwyn Vale and centre Josh Adams capable of giving some variety with kicks.
