Three days of intense competition at Maitland came to a conclusion on Thursday when the Catholic side Polding defeated Combined Independent Schools 26-24 after accounting for arch rivals Mackillop 41-34 in a semi-final.
Coaching by Rebecca Rizzo from St Patrick’s Lithgow, Demi and Kirsty held down two places in the side. Other members were Amy Love (Cathedral, Bathurst), Isabell Brierley (Our Lady Star of the Sea, Terrigal), Bree Delaney (St Philip Neri, Northbridge), Hanna Healey (St Patrick’s Lithgow), Cassidy McLean (St Mary’s Warners Bay), Lianna Gee (St Peter’s, Port Macquarie) and Eleanor Hewitt and Elizabeth Laurie from Mary Help of Christians, Sawtell.
It is interesting to note that Eleanor Hewitt is the daughter of Allison and Michael Hewitt who are former Wellington residents. Allison was employed by Wellington Council and Michael taught at St Mary’s Catholic School before they moved to the Coffs Harbour area and would eventually start a family.
The Polding win continued the district’s success at State level. In 2009 Polding defeated South Coast in the final with Mackillop third and Sydney East fourth. Western was sixth.
This year’s Western Area side contained three Dubbo girls - Abbie Merritt and Kyra Sutcliffe (Dubbo South Primary) and Ashleigh Taylor from Dubbo Public.
The rest of the side were Lauren Corney and Rhiannon Cowie (Cooerwull), Abby Wilson and Paige Dowsett (Wallerawang), Allira Riley and Katie Smith (Gilgandra Public), Rhiannon Cowie and Lauren Corney (Cooerwull Public).
The carnival highlight was the naming of the New South Wales side for the Australian Championships to be played in Darwin on August 7-14 with Demi Storch and Ashleigh Taylor, as well as coach Claire Hargreaves all coming from Dubbo.
