Matthew Carr and Michelle Lane, who both come from Dubbo, appeared in this week’s Woman’s Day in a spread about true love.
Major Carr said that the article came about after an old school friend and freelance journalist contacted them and asked for their story.
The story of Major Carr and Ms Lane is one that spans many years but did not always run smoothly.
The families of the pair were good friends and this is how they got to know each other at first.
It wasn’t until the pair both attended Dubbo South High School that they really got to know each other but even then the path to true love didn’t run smooth.
“We both went to South High but we moved in different circles. We didn’t really like each other or get along,” Major Carr said.
Major Carr said it wasn’t until he went away on an exchange trip to Japan in Year 11 that his and Ms Lane’s relationship changed.
“She became the world’s best penpal,” he said.
Despite the change it would still be years until they became a couple.
“Things never seemed to sync or work out. Either she would have a boyfriend or I would have a girlfriend,” he said.
That changed at the beginning of 2005 when they found themselves in London at the same time and finally got together.
The pair became engaged in 2006 and Major Carr left Australia in 2007 on a deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. His tour of duty lasted six months and on his return the couple began planning their wedding.
The couple wed on May 9, 2008 and have settled in Sydney.
