Central West seniors will play Central North in trials at Wade Park in Orange on January 30 as part of the program that will feature the NSW Waratahs playing Fiji but the under-20s won’t trial until later in the season.
Prop James Dodd, backrower Sam Renneberg and fullback Bryce Williams are all Roos boys while Jordan Richardson and Doug Potter, Scott Burgess are from Narromine and Kym Dorin is Wellington sole representative.
Coach Matt McRobert said about 50 players were in involved in the trials.
“We had to make a decision on the day as we didn’t want to string the boys along,” he said.
“We were going to pick a squad of 35 but then we looked at what we had and we thought we could have a pretty good squad of 30 and we’ll have a few more come in.
“It was important that we take our time and have a look at the kids.
“We’re very pleased with the outcome as there is a nice blend of size and talent across the park.
McRobert is sharing the Central West 20s coaching duties with Brian Roberson with their main aim being for success in the Country Championships in March.
Meanwhile, Central West senior coach Dean Oxley has delayed naming his squad.
“There are a few people who weren’t available to trial and we weren’t able to finalise anything until we know if they’re available,” Oxley said.
“We just have to touch base with these guys who weren’t there (on Saturday) but we were happy with how it went.”
Oxley was hoping 60-70 players would try out on Saturday but only 35 players attended.
