Ten-year-old Georgie Brooke has been in hospital for two years after suffering seizures that left her with brain damage, but that hasn’t stopped her from winning hearts.
Her adoring fans - including a few football legends - came together and raised enough funds to purchase the equipment that will allow her to come home to her family.
Yesterday an overwhelmed Greg Brooke, Georgie’s father, said they were one step closer to having Georgie home.
The event raised enough money to purchase a special chair for Georgie and some extra to put into a trust fund for her ongoing needs, he said.
“We’re making plans with the hospital to take her home within a couple of weeks.”
For the family of five, including Georgie’s older sister and brother, that would mean the world.
“We’re never going to make things the way they were, after all we’ve suffered,” Mr Brooke said.
“But our family will feel complete again, it’s been two years since we were all under the same roof.
“Our other two children want her home.”
Although the Brookes have walked a tough road, the support the fundraiser received has made the sky a little brighter.
“It was a really good night, it gave us a lift,” he said.
“People were wishing us well, offering us friendship and encouragement.”
Mr Brooke sent out his thanks to Tom Barrett, the driving force behind the event, the Amaroo Hotel, Angus the auctioneer, Parra 3P - Ray Price, Terry Leabeater and Eric Grothe and their wives - Ron and Ray Boden, Nyngan Public School, the Daily Liberal and other businesses and individuals in Dubbo who donated goods to the night.
“And of course all the people who came along,” he said.
