Write down the name Hamish Gordon in your little black book and check out Australia's team for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. On the weekend the Dubbo youngster blitzed his opposition to win three gold medals at the New South Wales Little Athletics Championships held at the Olympic Stadium at Homebush. On the strength of that effort alone there has to be some confidence that given time and circumstances he will make into the highly competitive athletics track competition. For a number of years Athletics Australia has been crying out for talented athletes to come forward and get our country back up the ladder in international competition. Unfortunately that hasn't happened but hopefully Hamish can make that change. In the 10 years events at State, Hamish beat all comers in the 400 metres, 800m and 1500m, the latter being his pet distance. Hamish's parents, Vince and Tania had every right to be proud of their son, a Year 4 student at St Mary's Catholic School, who does his club running with Dubbo RSL Little As. "He really loves the 1500 metres and it's surprising how strong he is for his age," Vince said. "As he grows older and stronger his times are coming down and he seemed to peak on the weekend as he sliced nine seconds off his personal best. "He won the race in four minutes 58.3 and was full of running at the finish to win by about 40 metres. It was very exciting to watch and we were very proud of his efforts." But it wasn't only in the 1500m that Hamish was in control. He qualified for the 400m eighth fastest through the heats in 1:09 but came out and ran 1:03.4 in the final to win - a time that was again well under his PB of 1:08.7. This run was a real surprise according to Hamish's father. The 800m was again a top class effort and there was another PB in the offering. Hamish run 2:25.8 and was 10 seconds under his PB. Interestingly his previous best time would have seen him finish sixth on the weekend. Everything considered, Hamish obviously saved his best for the big events and that can only look good on his CV. Just prior to the boy's 10 years 1500m, another young Dubbo athlete was able to run into third place in the girl's equivalent. Tanisha Stanton, a former Dubbo Little As runner who now lives in Newcastle and competes under the Macquarie Shores club banner, came out and produced her best ever performance to gain the bronze medal. Tanisha, who was a student at Orana Heights Public School before moving to Newcastle, realised a dream to win a State medal and how she did it was extraordinary. "The bronze medal was a real surprise," her father David Stanton said. "She ran 5:32.3 and finished a massive 19 seconds under her personal best which was a pretty fine effort." The major medals were won by Katie Gamble (Hills District ) in 5;15.0 and Carolena Kostas (St George) 5:17.1. Four other Dubbo athletes did their best at the State titles but unfortunately weren't able to bring home medals. To their credit Nicola Hicks was 6th in the 15 years girls 800m; Katie Bown competed in the 12 years discus and shot put, Bryce Williams did the 1500m walk for 15s and Amy McAneney's mission was the 14 years 100m. All the Dubbo athletes proved to be great ambassadors for their clubs and their families and congratulations to them all for trying their best.
