Dubbo mother of three Marie Therese Purton can tell you what that feels like and she wants to in her book Waltzing with my Eyes.
However, the cost of getting her book published is beyond her means and she is looking for some financial help so she is able to tell the world her story.
Unable to move any part of her body since a massive stroke nine years ago left her in a state known as 'locked-in syndrome', Ms Purton has learned to communicate by blinking her eyes.
Assisted by her family and volunteer carers Ms Purton has written a book about her life and her condition.
Ms Purton's 16-year-old son Luke assisted her to write to the Daily Liberal to promote her story and help find a community group or individual that could help her raise $20,000 to publish her book.
In her letter Ms Purton explained a bit about her condition and her life of full-time care at Lourdes Hospital.
"For the past nine years I have resided at Lourdes Hospital Nursing Home - I am hoping you can help me," she wrote. "During this time a friend has helped me write of my experiences prior to, and as a resident, of the nursing home.
"My story outlines my experiences as I have lived away from my family and three young sons.
"I am hoping someone can help me raise the $20,000 needed to publish my manuscript"
Ms Purton added she would appreciate any input regarding ways and means of raising the required funds.
"My book tells of the challenges my family and I have faced and how I struggled and learned to accept a life like this," she said.
"The draft of my book is nearly finished and I am hoping to get it published in June, and hopefully at the same time release a musical CD that includes the first song I wrote Waltzing with my Eyes."
Offers of assistance to the Waltzing with my Eyes publishing fund can be made to Ms Purton's sister Annette Ryan on 6884 0039.
