Like many of his Hornets teammates, Murray is relatively inexperienced in the RSL Whitney Cup but he has shown throughout his short time in top grade he is not just there to make up numbers.
After Souths lost several of their more experienced players, the focus of the club has turned to develop its juniors and Murray is one of those.
Debuting in first grade last year, Murray had somewhat of a break-out game against the eventual premiers RSL Colts scoring 76 but this season he will predominantly bat number, four which brings its challenges.
"It's a bit of a step up," he said.
"I've got to get a bit more confidence but it should be alright."
On his knock last season, Murray believes it was an enjoyable experience to be part of.
"It was pretty good and pretty fun," he said.
"It was good to be around and get some encouragement from everyone. It gives a lot more confidence to me."

Murray and the majority of the young Hornets have played a lot of cricket together growing up before playing first grade which is something the Souths batter enjoys.
"Having so many young ones this year, it's always good to have a couple of blokes who can tell us what to do and get around the team," he said.
"It's always fun playing with Rudy [Peet], Lachie [Rummans], Jack [Byrne] and Bolo [Ryan Boland]."
The classy Murray top-scored for Souths with 35 last weekend against Newtown but the side struggled to make a competitive total.
Souths will welcome back a familiar face at the top of the order this weekend for their clash against Macquarie and Murray believes the squad are feeling positive about their chances.
"Pretty good with the team we have," he said.
"We've got Ferrett [Josh Williams] back for this game. So that adds another experienced player to our team with the young ones we've got as well."
Macquarie will welcome back a familiar face of their own with Jason Green named to make his season debut after not playing last weekend.
However, without Green, Macquarie did not struggle at defeating Rugby by eight wickets with Lachlan Strachan and Myles Smith enjoying strong all-round games.
Saturday's games will see the return to the 40-over-a-side format for the RSL Whitney Cup but wet weather during the week could impact fixtures for all three grades.
Jacob Hill and Rugby will be looking to get their first win of the season this weekend when they take on rivals RSL Colts in the RSL Whitney Cup.
Both sides will enter Saturday's match at No.1 Oval coming off different results in the opening weekend of play.
Rugby were beaten by Macquarie while RSL Colts held on for a tight win over CYMS.
In promising signs for Rugby, openers Nathan Munro and Ben Wheeler looked in good form last weekend and the pair will be key again this weekend if they are to defeat RSL Colts.
In the rounds other match, Newtown will be looking to make two wins in a row when they take on CYMS at No. 2 Oval.
The Tigers got off to a strong start last week against Souths but will need to be wary of a fired-up Cougars outfit.
Several of the Cougars struggled to fire last weekend and will no doubt be looking to go big against Newtown.
Play starts at 1pm.
