Fitness Focus owner Andrew Bassett said the donations had been collected in December for the women’s refuge. Staff and the gym’s members were encouraged to bring in items to donate during the month, Mr Bassett said.
By his own estimate, Mr Bassett said he believed around $5000 worth of goods had been brought in – including new toasters, kettles, sandwich presses, sanitary items and beauty products – to help women in need.
People hadn’t just bought two tubes of toothpaste, Mr Bassett said, but had been in full support of the campaign.
Stars for a Christmas tree could also be purchased, adding $1000 cash to the Orana Support Service donation.
The gym owner said the campaign was started as a way to give back at Christmas time.
On Tuesday all the items were handed over to Orana Support Service.
OSS CEO Peter Gallagher said as a local charity it was great to see local businesses giving their support. Mr Gallaher said he was very grateful for the donation.
It was not the first time the gym had helped out a local cause. Mr Bassett said Fitness Focus had also raised money for the Dubbo Hospital in the past.
