Connah Matthews, 18, is currently undergoing treatment in Concord Hospital after being injured in the seven-vehicle crash on the Newell Highway.
He was trapped in the wreckage of a vehicle crushed by a semi-trailer for some hours and police said on Wednesday it was a miracle he survived.
On Thursday a statement was released on behalf of his family.
“Connah’s family would like to extend its sincere condolences to the families of those killed in the accident, and thank hospital staff and emergency personnel who have cared for him,” it said.
“They are declining all interviews at this time and ask that the media respect their privacy so they can focus on assisting Connah in his recovery.”
