At about 9.20pm the 57-year-old Dubbo woman was getting into her car, which was parked on Victoria Street.
An unidentified man approached the woman from behind and grabbed her handbag, which at the time was draped over her shoulder.
When she refused to let go of the bag, the assailant dragged the woman on to the ground and out on to the roadway.
It was at this point that a passing motorist stopped and yelled at the attacker, who fled from the scene.
"We ask that the man, that took the time to stop and assist the woman, come forward so we can speak to him,” Inspector Dan Skelly said.
“He is not in any trouble, we just need a bit more information and we ask that he give us a ring at Dubbo Police Station on 68831599.
“We want to catch this thug and put him where he belongs, before a court.”
