Rugby set an impressive target of 274 with Munro and Ben Patterson (80) starring with the bat, but the Cougars had no trouble racking up 276 in reply – with seven wickets still in hand.
Captain Ben Knaggs said the win – CYMS’ first of the season – was a huge confidence boost.
“I’m over the moon with the result,” he said.
“Lately we’ve been lacking a bit of confidence so to get the win yesterday and to chase down 274 was a big effort from us.
“We’ve been batting and bowling really well but we’ve been losing wickets early. But yesterday was a great win and really exciting.”
Rugby got off to a shaky start and the top order crumbled early with Jordan Murphy (10), Ben Wheeler (4), James O’Brien (10) and Campbell Rose (5) all out by the end of the tenth over.
CYMS looked to have Rugby on the run before Munro and Patterson joined at the crease and dug in for an innings-saving 131-run partnership.
After smashing deliveries left, right and centre the big-hitting Patterson was eventually caught by Tom Coady from Tom Nelson.
Munro kept going about his work, with some fleeting help from Baye Wallace (15), Luke Mack (6), Ben Taylor (23) and Zac Murphy (3*), to set CYMS a big target – but it was not quite big enough.
“We knew it was gong to be a hard game and [Rugby] shows that during their innings,” Knaggs said.
“We had them at 4/33 at one stage but Munno and Patters dug in.
“For [Munro] to get a century but not be on the winning side must be pretty hard … I’m a bit devastated for him actually.
“With the ball [Nick] Guthrie [3/25] played a massive part early on, grabbing two quick wickets, and I thought Brock Larance and Lochie Endacott – even though they didn’t take any wickets – bowled really well in the middle overs.”
Matt Ellis (10) and David McAlister (70) opened for CYMS and went straight to work chasing the total.

- Ben Knaggs
After hitting away a massive 11 fours, McAlister was eventually bowled by Adrian Carey.
But not before he combined with Tom Coady (38) for an impressive 105-run partnership.
Coady stuck with Brock Larance (82*) for a while before he was caught by Ben Taylor, but Larance went on to build another massive partnership – 122 runs – with his skipper (52).
“With the bat David McAlister really set the standard for us,” Knaggs said.
“Tom Coady batted well for his 38 and Brock really brought it home with his 82 not out, which was awesome.
“During the start of the season, one of us was getting a big score, but [on Saturday] everyone started and went on … and made 50-plus.
“We really came home strong and I’m very proud.”
