On Thursday morning they heard for the first time, or were reminded, of five ways to stay safe at the beach including “always swim between the red and yellow flags” and swim with an adult/friend”.
Beach to Bush was launched in response to 1994 research showing 50 per cent of people rescued from the surf lived more than 50 kilometres from the beach.
Its presenters visit St Laurence’s Primary School each year and “just before the Christmas holidays”, reports year 6 teacher Claire Hargreaves.
“We think it’s such an important program allowing students to revisit the safety messages and skills they need when they visit the beach,” she said.
Surf Life Saving NSW reports of almost 5000 rescues being performed between September and April each year.
Beach to Bush sponsors are ClubsNSW and the Cancer Institute NSW.
